Sorry, we don’t do chapter breaks.

I’m going to try and format book two. I didn’t do too badly with book one, but in the end, I sent it away to be formatted for digital because I couldn’t get the damn thing to do chapter links properly. I read and re-read the Smashwords Style Guide a hundred times (well, maybe not a hundred), and no matter how hard I tried, the entire process eluded me.

Then I started thinking; why do I need chapter breaks anyway? Some people will say it makes it easier for the reader to find where they’ve left off. I say bull shit. With both the Kindle app and the e Book app I have on my laptop, if I close the applications in the middle of a book and re-open it, guess what—they both take me RIGHT BACK to the same place. Plus, there’s a little program called BOOKMARKS, that will do the exact same thing. So I’m thinking, no more chapter links for me.

Personally, a Table of Contents and links should only be in a book if you’re the type of writer who gives each chapter a name, OR, if you’re writing non-fiction. Since I do neither, I’m happy to omit the little buggers. Besides, so far, my books are rather small; six chapters.  Come on, do you really need a Table of Contents for something that small?

Now, if someone could direct me to an easy way of linking websites to the acknowledgement page, you’d be my BFF!

  1. Ohhhh…formatting your books yourself are you 🙂

It’s not that hard. I’ve seen people complain about getting their formatting past the Smashwords’ meatgrinder, but I haven’t had any problems, yet (knock on wood).

  2. Yeah, I’ve heard a few people complain too, but I think it’s more they didn’t follow it right. I’m excited, that’s for sure!

  3. Yeah, I don’t do the TOC linking thing either. My mind simply boggles when I try to figure it out.

I’m not sure what you mean by linking to the acknowledgment page. As far as I know, if you have a hyperlink in your document, that link should be live in the e-reader. Is that what you want to do?
