Mythical Wednesday: Déjà vu

One of the most controversial, and joked about phenomenon has to be déjà vu. That specific moment when it feels as though you’ve done that exact same action before. Wikipedia lists Déjà vu as ‘the impression that one has already witnessed or experienced a current situation’. One scientist guy thinks that it’s some kind of brain malfunction, and that somehow, at that precise moment, our brain has a sort of ‘hiccup’ and registers what just happened as something that happened before. No, I didn’t understand that explanation either. I have my own take on this phenomenon, but it involves String Theory and the destruction of the universe.

It can be an unsettling sensation and the few times I’ve experienced it, I’ve had a serious sense of dread follow. Nothing happened, but just the feeling that something might, was enough to keep me shaky for a while. I still remember the first time (at least as far as I know) that I experienced it. I was riding in a car with my boyfriend (circa 1984). We were driving down one of the boulevards in the city, and just as we came up to the stop light—it hit. Man it was the weirdest thing! I remember thinking ‘Okay, something is gonna happen…NOW.’ (that sense of dread I mentioned earlier), but nothing did. I’ve experienced it about half a dozen times since then so six time in the last 28 years, isn’t that bad.

What about you? Have you ever experienced this before? What was your reaction? How did it make you feel?

  1. It hasn’t happened to me in several months, but they occur regularly. I try very hard to remember WHEN I originally had the experience that I think is happening again. This is how I realized that I didn’t actually have the experience, but rather, the vision of the experience.

Many times the actual event doesn’t occur for years. I’m fascinated that I’m able to pick up on events so far in the future. If only one of those experiences would’ve given me the six numbers to the lottery. 🙂

  2. I’ve felt it occasionally, but it always seemed to be centered on something that just happened. I never had a feeling that something ELSE was going to happen next. The moment was already gone by the time I registered the feeling. Does that make sense?
