A Personal Observation – It’s Almost Convention Time!

October is finally here and I have officially gone into ‘OMG-THE-WORLD-FANTASY-CONVENTION-IS-THE-END-OF-THIS-MONTH-AND-I’M-NOT-READY’ mode.

The World Fantasy Convention will be the first convention I’ve ever been to, and I’m so excited I can’t contain it! The best thing, apart from seeing some of my online writer friends, is the theme. Gothic and Urban fantasy. How perfect is that! I’ve been working on query letters and synopsis for my Side WIP and Side-Side WIP. I’m not really expecting anything to come from it, but I want to be prepared just in case. You never know, right?

I’m selling some of my books too. Not a lot, I’m only taking twenty with me. I wanted to get a new cell phone so I could take pictures, but alas, funds are minimal. No new camera for Darke. I’m taking my digital camera, but it’s not the same.

As this is my first convention, I’m pretty green about how things are done. Are there things I should look out for? Little secrets that could make the experience better? I was going to dress up (kind of) but I read a post from another writer and she suggested to keep the fancy shoes for parties. I didn’t even know there were parties!

I’d love to hear any suggestions you might have.

About Darke Conteur
Darke Conteur is a writer at the mercy of her Muse. The author of stories in several genres, she prefers to create within the realms of Science Fiction and Dark Fantasy. A pagan at heart, her personal goal is to find her balance within nature; exploring the dark through her stories and the light through her beliefs. When not writing, she spends her time collecting crystals, knitting, gardening, cooking and listening to very loud music.

  1. You’re going to have a great time. Definitely wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be schlepping all over the place. And bring an extra bag to carry books and swag. You’ll be bringing plenty home.

If you don’t have business cards, I would definitely get some printed. I hand them out like candy when I go. It’s a great way to meet new people (and remember their names). Bring a notebook and pen to take notes.

I wrote an article on networking at cons.
You can find it here: http://www.wow-womenonwriting.com/16-how2.html

Good luck and have fun. Let us know how you fared.

    • I knew about bringing a bag, but not about the pen and notepad. Thanks! I’ve bookmarked your link so I can find it again. I have business cards, 500. I might just bring them all. 😀 As for shoes, once I see the schedule I’ll have a better understanding of what to wear. I hope! Thanks, Maria!

Awesome. I’m assuming you’ve already gone on this trip (or are on this trip right now) and I’m jealous. It sounds like so much fun! I love gothic and fantasy anything!
