How to Expose Yourself the Right Way, Part Two

coollogo_com-23326655Okay, so as I was reading over my last entry on writing, I decided to expand on the marketing aspect. In this new era of publishing, whether you’re with a Trad. house, Indie or doing it yourself, you need to get out and promote your work.

The Indie and Self-published author don’t have a lot of tools available to them, but one of the strongest, is the free ebook. Yet the biggest mistake I see some authors making is using this as the primary way of promotion. The free ebook is a TOOL, not a STRAGEGY. It’s something to be used along with other promotional ideas.

The key word in marketing is, and always will be, visualization. Having a free ebook allows the reader to sample what you have, but if you’re stuck in only one place, who’s going to see it?

I’ve heard Amazon is dropping affiliates who promote free ebooks, but there are still many places that will do it. The link below will take you to a website with plenty of opportunities to promote your book.

NOTE: READ OVER EACH SIGHT CAREFULLY. While some say they’ll promote for free, they either did and no longer offer it, or it’s a play on words.

If you’re still unsure about going free (as I was for several months), don’t think of it as giving away your work for free, think of it as swag; the prize people get when they visit your website.

(DISCLAIMER: If you only have one book published, don’t follow the FREE Ebook Strategy. It’s not meant for you. Sorry.)

  1. Thanks for the link!

This reminds me of a friend of mine. He was so excited to start Amazon’s KDP program only he made one small miscalculation. This was his only book and he was months away from finishing his second. Definitely a “D’oh!” moment. Thankfully, he recovered. Nothing toughens your skin like experience. 🙂

    • It almost breaks my heart to see authors use limited platforms. I want to grab them by the shoulders and shake them, but (apart from being charged with assault) they need to learn and sometimes it’s the hard way that stays.
