Mythical Wednesday; Urban Legend Movies

coollogo_com-581457My last few posts on urban legends has dealt with Hollywood and either their take on them or ones that revolved around the entertainment industry. This time, I want to talk about movies inspired by urban legends.

Check out this link:

There have been at least sixty movies made that were inspired by urban legends. While some, like WHEN A STRANGER CALLS and CANDYMAN are some of the better known movies, this list was very interesting to look over. Many I’d never heard of, and it seems that Hollywood is not the only place where these legends are fodder for movie makers.

There are a few movies on this list like the Japanese movie CARVED 2 (which, despite it coming after and billed as ‘2’, is a prequel to the original movie), was based on real events. While most urban legends are based on rumours or fear, Carved 2 could be considered a true story, somewhat like the antagonist in the movie Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Another movie, BOOK OF SHADOWS; THE BLAIR WITCH 2, is not an urban legend at all. The original movie, THE BLAIR WITCH, was fiction and not based on anything. It’s also interesting to note that the directors of the original movie, were not impressed with the final result of the sequel.

Urban legends are a goldmine for moviemakers, and if the SAW franchise is any indication, Hollywood is not done yet bring us movies that will no doubt scare the audience out of their wits.

I, for one, won’t be watching. I like my sleep.

What about you? What urban legend movies have you seen?

Blair Witch 2 was a truly awful film. I remember watching Urban Legend in the cinema when I was young and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread (I know different now 🙂 ) One film they haven’t mentioned on that list is the Tall Man. It’s currently on Netflix. I watched it a few weeks back. It was…okay-ish
