Movie Night: Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Genre: Action/Adventure/Fantasy/Scifi

Rating: PG-13

Synopsis: Shang-Chi, the master of weaponry-based Kung Fu, is forced to confront his past after being drawn into the Ten Rings organization.

I’ve been waiting for this movie for a very long time, and I have to say, I was not disappointed. I love martial arts movies. I find the choreography to be poetic, and this was beyond poetry. The action starts almost immediately, and you soon get a sense of what the movie is about to offer. The plot flows well, even with a few flashbacks. We had to read some of the movie, but that’s fine with me. It was nice to see a superhero movie that wasn’t all white people. As a matter of fact, the only white people were henchmen.

While I’m not familiar with the story of Shang-Chi, the comic series from Marvel was very popular, especially during the 70’s and the kung-fu obsession. I had no problem understanding and following the plot, and a few mentions of characters from other Marvel movies (including one appearance I was NOT expecting), added to the connection to the Marvel universe. FYI – two end credit Easter eggs. I love the two main actors, Simu Liu and Awkwafina, they’re a great pairing with her comedic timing being spot on.

I will admit, part of my good review is based on the fact that it’s been almost a whole year since the last time I went to a theatre. Just the experience of being in the seat and the atmosphere contributed to my enjoyment, none-the-less, this is an excellent movie.

After so many superhero movies, I was getting a little bored with anything coming from Marvel, but this renewed my excitement. I HIGHLY recommend this movie.
